We are excited to present our new podcast, 'Talking Meds' with our host Jonathan Underhill and guests.
Talking Meds will be available to listen to via your usual podcast system and a new episode will come out every other Friday.
Jonathan Underhill has a background as a hospital clinical pharmacist but worked for many, many years at the National Prescribing Centre (NPC) developing innovative ways of teaching therapeutics, evidence-based medicine and clinical decision making to prescribers and their support teams. Until recently, he worked at NICE as a consultant clinical adviser in their Medicines Optimisation Team.
Episode 1 launched in September 2024 with guest Magnus Hird, a pioneer of clinical pharmacists working in General Practice in Blackpool, an area of significant deprivation in North West England. Jonathan and Magnus discussed how he prioritises the patients he sees for medication review, as well as discussion the implications for practice of a couple of current clinical issues that have been in the medical press around use of NSAIDs and management of asthma.
Episode 2 featured the first in series of podcasts on ’Sensible prescribing in Older people with Jonathan and Lucy’, with consultant geriatrician and author Lucy Pollock. They discussed prescribing cascades in the first episode from 4th October - look out for future episodes with more 'top tips' of what to look out for when talking to older people about their medicines choices.
Episode 3 from 18th October was a cracker with consultant psychiatrist Mark Horowitz where Jonathan and Mark discuss safely stopping antidepressants. Its a real tricky issue for many clinicians when reviewing antidpressant use and the as co-aouthor of the Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines, Mark's insights are valuable
