AF and Anticoagulation - new NICE guidance / The new NHS Integrated Care System model - 28th April 2021

Following the changes to the UK pharmacy undergraduate degree beginning in 2021, all new pharmacists entering the register in July 2025 will automatically be annotated as independent prescribers, dependent on passing the registration exam and successfully submitting a portfolio of evidence demonstrating competence in all the learning outcomes, including prescribing competence.

Foundation trainees will be expected to fulfil all criteria currently set for post-graduate IP learners before registration. This provides exciting opportunities for pharmacist prescribers to enhance their roles by becoming Designated Prescribing Practitioners.

Eleanor Barnes is the Lead Clinical Pharmacist for a GP federation in Bradford, West Yorkshire. She has 16 years' experience in primary care in a variety of roles including patient-facing clinics, service management, and strategic planning. Eleanor is supporting local mechanisms to develop the DPP provision for FY trainees and for post-graduate IP students and will be supporting two foundation year sandwich trainees from University of Bradford in the first undergraduate cohort to register as IPs from August alongside a post-graduate IP trainee.

In this session, Eleanor shared her knowledge gained from the planning of this training and demystify the expectation from existing IPs. Whether you are a current pharmacist IP or planning to become one, this session provided useful insight into further developing your role.

Noma and Graham attended to discuss how the Propharmace DPP course is supporting IP pharmacists to become DPPs.
