Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire Pharmacy Workforce Development Group identified a need to change the model for changing Pre Registration Pharmacy Technicians within the system as Technicians were being trained in hospital and then leaving to work in primary care (community or PCN). Collaboratively we worked through the issues for each area of the system and asked potential trainees what roles they wanted. This led us to the conclusion that primary care were willing to take their share of the training burden but that they required support from a dedicated and experienced lead to enable this to happen. A single lead employer model was therefore set up and the time of an experience education and training lead paid for to support teams in training Pharmacy Technicians across the system.
The System Education and Training Lead Technician:
\- Advertised and recruited trainees
\- Developed honorary contracts
\- Assisted with the process of application to the University course
\- Accessed levy transfer
\- Developed training programmes and system wide placements in line with the needs of the course
\- Supports Educational Supervisers
\- Supports Trainees
\- Provides systemwide learning events and support network events
\- Collectively supervises assessments to avoid duplication
The model has been very successful in supporting training, increasing confidence in providing training and breaking down cross sector barriers.
