Midlands and Lancashire CSU on behalf of Greater Preston and Chorley and South Ribble CCGs

Introduction

To improve repeat prescribing systems in GP practices in order to minimise waste and clinical risks.

How was the project established? / How is it currently being established?

There are 60 practices across the 2 CCGs and they were all invited to take part in the project. Practices came on board throughout 2017/18 with the majority of practices completing the work before the end of the year. The review consisted of a healthcheck audit reviewing all areas of repeat prescribing, this was followed by training and action planning with the practice facilitated by Pharmacy Technicians from the Medicines Optimisation Team. Patients and local pharmacies were informed by letter of any changes to current systems.

Who are the main beneficiaries of the project? How would they benefit?

Practices have reported a reduction in queries regarding repeat prescriptions and improved communication with patients. Patients have benefited from a more efficient and safer service. Savings have been generated through a reduction in prescribed items.
