Reducing medicines waste in Care Homes (2024)

Frimley ICB

Project Summary

The aim of this project was to reduce the level of medicines waste in Care Homes, specifically avoidable waste. There is a great deal of financial strain on the NHS at present and we are also experiencing unprecedented medicines supply issues.

We wanted to help educate and empower our care homes to know how and when to dispose of medicines appropriately to try and aid this.

Overall, we made good savings for the system. But we were also able to increase care home engagement with the project and general stock management.

We were able to support care homes through digital system changes, which in turn had a positive impact on stock management and reduced avoidable waste. Feedback has been incredibly positive from the care homes involved and the work is ongoing.
