Medicines Ordering Portal (2020)

Norfolk and Norwich Hospital

Project Summary

In response to COVID-19, a new way to order stock medicines, controlled drugs and medication for the patients on critical care areas was required. This needed to minimise paper transfer through the hospital, allow staff who were wearing PPE to easily order what was needed, and allow for the pharmacy staff to easily interpret what was required and issue the stock to the correct areas and deliver to the correct location.

After much debate, we narrowed down what required and came up with some basic designs. This was translated into a draft web based form which was tested by some nurses and pharmacy staff. Adjustments were made and the form was finalised. Documentation was completed to allow for it to pass change control board. It was presented to the COVID-19 cell, who managed the hospital during COVID-19, and it was approved. In so doing it also began the dissemination process. Communications and user guides were developed.

Phase two of the development saw it extend to a simple order form for medicines for patients on Critical Care areas, which use MetaVision. At this point, further documentation and risk assessments were required to ensure it complied with information governance.
